Avian Influenza Empty Avian Influenza

Post by shanaya January 23rd 2009, 9:14 pm

Looks like we may have to go through this crap again. There has been a possible finding on a turkey farm in Abbotsford of a strain of Avian Flu. The turkeys have shown to have antibodies in their blood. One of our grower farms is within the 3km range of that farm so it is under quarantine. Thank god the egg farm in Abby isn't in that area! Seriously, if this turns out to be another wipeout that affects our jobs there, I am looking at another career. Neutral

Well that is odd.... I don't see it in the headlines any more. False alarm?

I sure hope so!

I found one article on the MSN.ca page, but none on the cbcnews.ca page.

Avian flu detected in southern B.C.: CFIA

Looks like just the turkey farm so far.But still restricted 3km area.
The H5 avian flu virus has been found in a commercial turkey farm in B.C.'s Fraser Valley, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed Saturday.

The federal agency said tests to date indicate that the strain involved in this case is "low pathogenic."

Pathogenicity refers to the severity of the illness caused in birds. More tests are being done to determine the exact strain of the virus.

The initial testing was done after some of the 50,000 turkeys on E&H Farms in Abbotsford showed signs of respiratory distress.

Abbotsford is about 75 kilometres southeast of Vancouver.

Any infected meat that may have been sold will pose no risk to humans if the poultry is handled and prepared properly, said a disease control specialist with the CFIA.

"All birds on the infected premises will be euthanized and disposed of in accordance with provincial regulations," said Sandra Stephens.

"Once all birds have been removed, the CFIA will oversee the cleaning and disinfection of the barns, vehicles, equipment and tools that are on the premises."

In addition, the agency is restricting transport of poultry and poultry products within three kilometres of the infected operation.

Looks like the Bradner Farm will be quarantined for up to 21 days. That means we can't bring hatches there or move the birds that are ready for processing. The plant workers will be mostly affected. :[

I haven't heard from anyone today but according to the paper, the other farms aren't totally quarantined, just restricted access. They need to be tested weekly but should be able to move birds under strict rules.

Well, we tested negative at Bradner Road farm where it is in the 3 km restricted zone so we can move birds in and out. Also we can sell balut eggs across the border(did not know in the morning if they would close the border to any transport of poultry stuff) as we are not in the 3km zone at the hatchery nor anywhere we have egg layers. That is certainly a relief! Still will be walking on egg shells(so to speak) for the next 3 weeks. It depends alot if any more farms test positive for AI. So far, it seems only to be at the turkey farm.

That is good news, but quite a worry..Maybe they have a better crew for
the testing this time..Sure hope so because the other times they were just jerks..Especially the ones from Quebec, they seemed to enjoy their job too
much & contaminated more.by not following sanitary steps as you said they
were very messy & didn`t take care when touching door knobs etc.
This time they seem to have to be really
suited up to not carry this futher..Did they learn their lesson?

Glad it's not affecting you much, Shawna. I'll hold good thoughts that they get it contained, and stop it in its tracks. Meanwhile, you be careful, okay?

Are any of the Fraser Valley Duck & Goose Involved in this?
Sure hope not..

Nine farms added to avian flu quarantine in Fraser Valley

Thirty-six poultry operations across the Fraser Valley are now under quarantine after inspectors sealed off nine more operations to try to contain an avian flu outbreak in the region.

The disease has been confirmed on only one farm so far although testing and monitoring continue.

On Sunday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency quarantined the nine new farms because they received products or equipment from the affected facility.

Seven of the newly quarantined farms are outside the three-kilometre restricted zone established as soon as avian flu was suspected at the first farm.

About 60,000 turkeys on the E & H Farms property in Abbotsford were destroyed last week after testing confirmed an H5 strain of the avian influenza virus had infected birds in one of two operations on the site

As far as I know, we can move birds from Bradner. They re-measured and we are actually outside of the 3km zone and we do not have any dealings with the affected farm.
