I am quite curious how you all feel about this .. is it art or exploitation? In my opinion I find it wrong to take and expose children naked.

U of L: nude children photos in exhibit to stay
Posted: Feb 22, 2010 10:27 PM EST

http://www.fox41.com/global/story.asp?s=1202723

Critics say nude photos of children on display at the University of Louisville this week have no educational value and should be removed. But U of L and the photographer say the photos will stay, as part of a larger exhibit on women's bodies and self-esteem.

The exhibit also shows -- and tells -- the stories of elderly women, the obese, the anorexic, amputees and those who've had breasts removed because of cancer. Everyone is shown nude. That's how student Meredith Pass sees the point of a photo exhibit of 85 nude females, from birth to their nineties, on display a second time at U of L's Student Activities Center.

The exhibit was first displayed on campus in 2008 to about 800 visitors and little criticism, organizers said. The 2010 showing is different. Kentucky's Family Foundation sees pictures of children in the exhibit as exploitation.

"This isn't education; this is exploitation," said Kent Ostrander, foundation executive director, in a prepared statement.

For example, one photo shows a 12-year-old girl as she smiles, standing next to the tire swing in her yard. An 11-year-old girl sits nude outdoors in a photo -- about ten years after photographer Frank Cordelle took her picture as a baby.

"I think the people who object here aren't objecting because this isn't art or this isn't lousy art. They're objecting because it's nude. This is more of a gut reaction thing than anything else," said Frank Cordelle, photographer.

Provost Shirley Willihnganz said it is appropriate to display the photos, particularly those of the children.

"They do make people uncomfortable. It's important to remember the context that this is in. This is an artistic celebration of the life span of women's bodies," said Shirley Willihnganz, provost.

Down from each of the picture and see a statement that's attached, a statement written by the subject of the picture. In several cases, the person in the photo says she was a victim of abuse. She also says having her picture taken in the nude was liberating.

"Anyone who read any of the stories would not be leering. It's not what it's about. It's actually a painful experience to look at," said Justin Mog, visitor.

U of L sponsors the exhibit, called The Century Project, as part of Body Awareness Week on campus. Signs at the door warn of nudity ahead. The focus is understanding the connection between a woman's body and her self-esteem.

Cordelle says the age range -- and the nudity -- are appropriate and legal to show women's views of their bodies throughout life. He adds the parents of each child gave permission for the photos.

Photographer Frank Cordelle explains "The Century Project" photos through his website here. The site shows samples of the photos now on display at University of Louisville through Friday. Samples include a birth, young girls and women through age 94, all nude. You'll also find the stories that accompany each photo in the exhibit.

"The Century Project" is open 9 a.m. through at least 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday in the multipurpose building at U of L's Student Activities Center. Admission is free. It is part of "Body Awareness Week" on campus.

I am quite curious how you all feel about this... Empty Explicit PIctures ...

Post by Mousessugar February 23rd 2010, 5:42 pm

Here is an actual link to the artist's page.. naked children.. a 12 year old .. a 16 year old... I find this all very disturbing.. I think it is wrong.. to me it is nothing but pornography...

http://www.thecenturyproject.com/newsite/html/project/photos.html

HEre is also another link about the project..

http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/02/22/century

Today at the University of Louisville, an unusual art exhibit called The Century Project will open as part of a week of activities designed to promote healthy body image.

Because the project features photographs of nude women and girls, the university is facing pressure to call off or adjust the exhibit, as the University of North Carolina at Wilmington did last year, when it removed the images of girls as a condition of allowing the program to proceed. But Louisville has declined to demand changes and is standing behind the exhibit, saying that its message has been distorted by critics and that principles of free speech and academic freedom are at stake.

Shirley Willihnganz, provost at Louisville, said in an interview that she has been approached by people in the local community and by state legislators angry about the exhibit. And she said that while she is happy to explain the context of the exhibit, she is not willing to cancel it or to order its modification.

"I don't know what else to do it but talk to people," she said. But she added that part of what she explains is that "the core of the university is the idea of freedom of expression and freedom of speech."

Critics, galvanized by a professor at Oklahoma State University, say that the exhibit exploits women and girls and encourages violence against women -- charges vehemently denied by the photographer and the university.

The Century Project consists of more than 100 nude photographs of women and girls of all ages, accompanied by their stories. The statements deal with the women's lives and bodies. The project's Web site says that one of its goals "is to effect change in societal attitudes towards women’s bodies. Its method is to give voice to women through pictures and words, which project, among much else, courage, vulnerability, strength, diversity, multiplicity, and uniqueness." (A sampling of the photographs -- including one of a birth, some of young girls, and of women as old as 94 -- may be found here.)

The most controversial part of the touring exhibit is the inclusion of young girls. Frank Cordelle, the photographer, explains on his Web site that all girls are only photographed with both their consent and that of a parent, and that they report that their inclusion was a positive experience for them.

The leading opponent of the exhibit is John D. Foubert, an associate professor of college student development at Oklahoma State University and a consultant on college and other programs to prevent rape. Foubert has created a Facebook group and some publicity about the exhibit, and that in turn has led some conservative groups and legislators in Kentucky to protest.

In an interview, Foubert acknowledged that the photographs in the exhibit are "legally not child porn." But he said that wasn't the key question. "This is about full frontal nude pictures of children. What is the educational value of showing nude 12-year-olds on their campus, and how is that helpful?"

Foubert said that extensive studies show that exposure to pornography can encourage men to rape or exploit women. Asked why that research was relevant, given that these photographs are not pornographic, he said that some of the studies weren't based on extreme pornography but that of the sort published in Playboy. And while many viewers might think these photographs are unlikely to turn up in Playboy, he said that what matters is the image of those photographed "in the eye of the beholder," who in this case could be a male Louisville student. "You have men walking through this exhibit, looking at pictures of women and girls. What goes on in their head when they look at these pictures?" Foubert asked. "How does this affect what they look at and fantasize about?"

A self-described "controversial academic," Foubert said he believes in free expression. "I'm a strong proponent of the First Amendment. I'm using those rights to bring attention to how they are abusing children. It is because of my First Amendment right that I can speak out about what they are doing," he said. Foubert said he wouldn't protest someone giving a lecture about the photographs, but that showing the photographs shouldn't be viewed as free expression.

"What people don't understand is that there are limits on free speech. You can't make threats against someone else," he said. "They are threatening the safety of their own students by bringing this exhibit."

Willihnganz, the provost, rejected all of the talk that the show is exploitative or pornographic, and she noted that a previous showing at the university yielded "positive reactions."

She said that "if you take out the context, it sounds horrible and I can understand how people would be upset and uncomfortable, but this is part of a week about helping women develop more positive self-images about their bodies," she said. "This is not about objectifying women," but about telling their stories. "This is about as opposite of pornography as you can get. This is about women coming to terms with their bodies."

And Willihnganz noted that while the discussion may be awkward for some, institutions that have censored some of the images have also had awkward discussions. Blocking some or all of the exhibit, she noted, does not make the controversy or the issues go away.

I'm sorry I have'nt had a chance to look at the link but did read your post n thru it all I gotta say that this piece is a "Walrus" defender right there, he'd have a field day on letting them keep it up.

To me, ANY exposure of children is wrong in the publics eye in their birthday suit as it were. & for someone to say that THEY are HELPING WOMEN to come to terms, who the hell died n made them boss as to how women expierence their self persona? If they need help there's shrinks out there that'll be more than happy to take their money from them n they can keep their clothes on while there.

JMO. If I get a chance I'll ck it out later

Well, I've always said it'd be a cold day in hell before I could agree with Walrus on anything of any import. But my opinion on this is that it's just the human body, without any Levis or WonderBras to hide it and shape it. People get too uptight about nudity, in my opinion. We all came in naked, and most of us, to an audience, to boot!
Maybe if we didn't try to deny so much, the fact that our bodies are nude, under our clothes, there wouldn't be such a feeling of shame attached to nudity.

If I suddenly found myself nude, on 5th Avenue, I'd be ashamed!

But it would be because of the condition my body is in, not my nudity.

I have mixed feelings about it. I do wish people were more liberal about nudity and also not think of it sexually as much. Where the children are concerned is where I get that bad feeling in my stomach. Mostly from what I experienced as a child. 3 of us kids were taking a bath and my uncle Fred asked us to stand up so he could take a pic. Little did we know at the time he was getting off on that. Years after that he would abuse us sexually, his own 2 girls and I. So all in all I can't accept the nude children part of the exhibit without bias.

I am quite ashamed of the condition I am in, WITH clothes on as well. Razz

I don't think young children should be exposed publicly like this on the web page, you can't even get into a playboy page without confirming age, and the mags are kept behind the counter only for those of legal age to view.

Taking your own private pics cyclops if that is what you want your children to learn is different than exposing them to the world.
I have to agree that there are too many perverts out there that seem to enjoy child nudity just a bit too much for my liking. No

I agree. It's not being ashamed, it's being personal. & I Do Not agree that ANY child should be exploited.

& Shawna, I'm glad u felt comfortable with us to tell us something so private. I feel for u and am so sorry that u had to expierience such at a young age really any age) & especially from a family member, that has to be horendeous, even to this day. I pray that u have found your peace, which it seems like u have, but it is a hard thing to carry. Everyone says that u'll out grow it or forget, but once ANY altering expierence happens, it will stay with u for life, it's like once an addict always an addict, so once a victem always a victem, u just learn to adjust. Everyone has some sort of weight of the scale on them, one side or the other or perhaps both, but living AFTER & moving forward is in steps. I'm glad to see such a beautiful talented funny smart,............woman that I've had the pleasure to meet here in this world of wirlessness.

Sorry for the OT there. But back on........I see Doc, u r a nudist in the closet LOL I am quite curious how you all feel about this... Icon_smile

I agree too Doc that nudity is fine with consenting adults..my problem is not with nudity, and no Im not a closet nudie lol, but when it comes to children I do not think they should be exploited in this way. I found this very disturbing. For you Shawna Im so sorry you had to go through that. NO child should ever have to go through any kind of abuse.. Children are a very sensitive subject for me, I am one overprotective Mom..thank you all for your input.

Hi Sharon. Yes I agree He does. I feel for u as well being a mother myself. I could not imagine what emotions I would be enduring had something like that happened to Amanda. I'd like to think that my faith would've allowed for some period of grace but how much & for how long would defineately be a trial for me.

Yep. He was the only person that I was glad that he died from cancer. Someone like him deserved it. Yes I have found peace with it, I survived it and became a stronger person, and also always told my son when he was little to never, ever let anyone touch him inappropriately. Especially someone he trusts. That was the hard part for me. I knew as a child not to talk to strangers, but a close relative, well, you are supposed to respect your elders. Not in those situations. I am glad it is talked about more openly than back then. Educate your kids!!!

No child should be put out there nude. If you are an adult do what you wish but it is not art when a child is exploited.

I tell u what Shawna. U talking about it, u are a testimony to those that may currently be in the same situation n your survival expierence will help another. I applaud u for that strength. This is not a subject that is openly discussed in a matter of fact supplying information style. There are so many that are ashamed & want it passed over. It does indeed take a strong person to express their trial & survival, which I can tell that you are indeed such a person. And informing children is a must. They do the stranger danger, but as said when it's from within a familiar surrounding it's an even more invasive expierence. Kudos to ya girl, support & applause is what u receive from me.
