Re: System restore
Depends on how many restore points you want to have available, Lynn.
I don't use System Restore but, I've always thought the default (12%) was a bit excessive. But, if you have plenty of hard disk space, it doesn't hurt to leave it at maximum so you have quite a few restore points available.
This would apply to both XP and Vista, of course.

Re: System restore
I set ours at 5%. I find that allows plenty of restore points.

Will it make your computer run faster set at 5% ?
Hi Lynn it will not make PC run faster all it does is gives more restore points,as Carl said if you have plenty of room on your hard drive if it is 12% just forget it.

Not faster, just give you more room on your HD.Lynn wrote:Hi Bill...

Cleaning and defraging your HD should make it faster.

Re: System restore
Lynn, the level at which you set System Restore really depends on how big the hard drive or partition is that your OS is on. If you have a hard drive of 50 gigs then 12% for system restore uses about 6 gigs. If your hard drive is 150 gigs then the same setting will use about 18 gigs of space which is way too much. I have a 160 gig hard drive and I se the slider at 3% which uses about 3.7 gigs of space. That is more than enough.
If you want to clear out some space before a defrag set the slider to 1% which will leave a few restore points in case of emergency then carry out a chkdsk then a defrag. After that you can reset the slider to give you about 3 or 4 gigs of space for system restore and restore points will gradually be created to take up that space. Once your allotted space is full the earliest restore points drop off to allow new ones.
